Denzel's Needs
Denzel has quadriplegia which means he is without the use of his arms or legs. He is currently unable to walk, sit up, eat by himself, shave or even scratch his nose. There is hope that Denzel may regain some use of his arms, but the focus of rehabilitation will be on learning to use the devices that he will need to rely on for his mobility and care and to help him be as independent as possible in his daily activities.
Denzel will be eligible for some home based care assistance. However, there will also be an incredible burden on Karen, giving the demands for caring for two small children, Denzel and being the family’s primary breadwinner. Current challenges include:
-
Accommodation: It is likely that Karen and Denzel will need to move from their current home as they are renting and significant modifications will be needed to allow Denzel to return home. Modifications usually involve ramps, widening doors and major bathroom renovations.
-
Transport: The family need a modified vehicle to be able to get out and about. Typically a mini van or people mover with a ramp and lift in the back is required for people who use power wheelchairs.
-
Equipment: Denzel will require a number of costly items of equipment to manage his mobility and care needs such as a power wheelchair, mechanical hoist and electric bed with pressure care mattress. Government assistance will cover some of this equipment, but there will still be substantial out of pocket costs for the family.
