Denzel Peters

The lives of Karen and Denzel Peters and their two children Nicholas (3) and Grace (2) changed forever on January 3, 2010. They were visiting family in Kimberley, South Africa for Christmas when, the day before they were due to fly back to Australia, Denzel slipped while playing with the kids and landed on his head in a backyard swimming pool. He broke his neck and sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury that left him with quadriplegia.

Denzel spent nearly two months in hospital in Bloemfontein during which time he had two operations to stabilise the bones by inserting metal plates and screws in his neck. During his time at a rehabilitation hospital he regained some movement in his neck and began to lift his arms.

Towards the end of February, Denzel, Karen and their children returned to Sydney to begin to rebuild their lives. Initially hospitalised at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Denzel was transferred to the rehabilitation centre in Ryde on March 5.

He is continuing with intensive therapy and training and is focused on one goal... to be able to walk again and play with his children, Nicholas and Grace.

The impact of Denzel’s life changing injury on the family is enormous. They need a great deal of support and assistance.

This website has been set up by friends and family of Karen and Denzel in the hope that we can make their journey a little easier.
